Why We Shut Ikpa Market Today: Nsukka Trader Narrates

By Adadareporters

A trader, Monica Okeke, selling yam at Ikpa Market at Nsukka, Enugu State, Monday, said the popular foodstuffs market was shut by the order of the leadership of the market.

She said, “We were instructed not to open today. We used to open on Mondays because IPOP permitted the sale of food items on Mondays.

“But the killings and destruction of property by unknown gunmen on Mondays in Nsukka particularly made our president order that we should not open today.”

Adadareporters heard that some traders’ associations were written letters, which were physically delivered to them, cautioning them against opening on Mondays.

Ngozi, a trader in the market who was seen selling her goods about 100 metres from the restricted area, said, “Before, foodstuffs were not restricted. Also drugs. I think IPOB has been hijacked.

“I came out today because I must struggle to feed my family. The killings are becoming too much. IPOB members are angry because we were not observing sit-at-home before.”

Our correspondent saw security men guarding the premises of the market.
