The Labour Party, Saturday, described the rerun of the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency as ‘a sham’. LP also called for its total cancellation.
The national secretary of Mr Umar Farouk, stated this in a release. Umar, who led a Labour Party monitoring team to polling stations involved in the bye elections, told journalists that due process was not followed.
Quoting him, “Accreditation has been compromised, result sheets have been hijacked, BIVAS machines disregarded and voters not allowed to exercise their right to vote.”
Farouk, who spoke in the company of the Labour Party House of Representatives candidate, Hon Dennis Agbo, called on INEC to ‘immediately cancel elections in areas where illegalities have been reported”.
Hon Agbo had accussed the PDP of using the local government vigilantes to intimidate Labour Party supporters, adding that LP members were being chased away from polling booths by the local vigilantes.
“It is unfortunate that INEC officials are now taking instructions from PDP officials and allowing voting to take place in private houses,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that Enugu State Police Command had Thursday banned non-conventional security operatives from rendering security services during the election. Police also warned politicians against coming to election venues with their security details.
The rerun was sequel to the cancellation of the victory of LP’s Dennis Agbo following the omission of the logo of APC in the results sheets by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Earlier today, a presiding officer at Igoro in Igboeze North LGA, one Rolland Ugwuja, was captured with already written result sheets even before the commencement of the voting. He admitted being given the documents by INEC.
