Ahead of the local government election holding on September 21, 2024 in Enugu State, the candidate of the Labour Party for Nsukka Local Government Area, Mr Ernest Ogwo, says he will assist hundreds of traders who were displaced from Ogige Market, Nsukka, as a result of a bus terminal currently being constructed at some parts of the market.
Our correspondent reports that over 2000 shops were affected by the demolition carried out by the state government for the execution of the project. Although the initiative was commended by some interests, the LP candidate claims the welfare of some displaced traders was not well taken care of.
Ogwo, who spoke during a campaign, also promised to reduce the tax burden on the poor, empower the youth and women with “almost zero-interest loans”, and publish statements of Nsukka LG’s finances monthly.
He also promised to be tapping knowledge from some scholars of the University of Nigeria, which is domiciled at Nsukka, as well as “Invest a minimum of N5m for projects in each of 20 wards of the LGA monthly”.
He further promised “to organise a meeting of Nsukka leaders of thought, at least every quarter, to harvest ideas on security of lives and property, poverty alleviation, traditions and culture for implementation.”
Enugu State, hitherto controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party, was strongly overrun by the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections, winning two senatorial seats of the state’s three, and having more House of Representatives seats at the National Assembly. Labour also had the majority in the state House of Assembly. It however lost the grip following the inexplicable decamping of its members to the PDP, which controls the state executive.
