A man claiming to be an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps was Tuesday nabbed in Anambra State.
The suspect, Emmanuel Ode, 55, was deceiving, extorting and committing fraudulent activities on unsuspecting citizens of the state, it was gathered.
The state commandant of NSCDC, Commdt Maku Olatunde, while parading the suspect on Wednesday, warned members of the public to report people of questionable character and claiming to be officers of the corps to appropriate quarters.
Commdt Olatunde, represented by the command’s head of media and tactical operations, Edwin Okadigbo, a superintendent, stated that, “On Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at about 1pm, operatives of the command on routine patrol responded to intelligence regarding the suspect’s suspicious activities around Aroma in Awka.
“Acting on this information, the team swung into action and apprehended the suspect, Emmanuel Oche, male, 55, from Agila Town in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, dressed in an NSCDC uniform.”
He said preliminary investigations revealed that Emmanuel Oche, the impersonator, used his fake civil defence officer’s status to intimidate and exploit innocent victims.
Okadigbo further disclosed that the suspect confessed to buying the NSCDC uniform from a second-hand cloth seller at Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, adding that the state commandant had ordered the Investigation and Intelligence Department to conduct discreet investigations to unravel the source of the uniform in addition to the motive behind the suspect’s actions.
He said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
