Parents were, Monday, forced to hold back their children and wards from going to school because of the flooded Nsukka-Enugu expressway, around Prince Oil junction, a stone’s throw to Ogige Market.
Our correspondent reports that Monday’s early morning rain flooded the double-land expressway built by the administration of former governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
“The drainages have been blocked by refuse,” lamented a parent identified as Charles Ogbodo. “I told my daughter schooling at the University of Nigeria Secondary School, Nsukka, not to go today. Both lanes of the road are flooded. Even motorists had to park. Those that ventured to pass were highly hampered. One even packed up.”
A student of a popular missionary school was seen trying to walk across the flooded area, but was asked to return home by an elderly woman. “Don’t risk it my son,” the woman told the frustrated student.
Mary Ani was conveying her daughter to school, but had to abandon the dangerous voyage when she saw the depth of the flood. “I can’t risk the life of my daughter for any reason,” she said. “We have a local government administration that can’t enforce simple evacuating refuse that has filled up the drainages. The problem is that people dump refuse bags into the channels, which has caused this. I expect the government to clear the gutters, and then constitute a task force to forestall the occurrence. What Nsukka LGA has is a task force to extort people for nothing sake. We expect them to rise to this challenge.”
It was gathered that about a month ago, a school girl was washed away by flood along Urban Girls-Ikenga Hotel road. Her corpse was found more than a kilometre afterwards.
