APC Chieftain Decries Lack Of Diligent Investigations Into Killings In Enugu

Former state chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, has decried lack of diligent investigations into murder cases and attempted assassination in Enugu State.

Nwoye, who spoke in Enugu during a programme monitored by our reporter, said the situation was deteriorating. He referred to the murder of the chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders’ Association, Mr Stephen Aniagu, last Saturday, as well as the killing of Barr Oyibo Chukwu, Labour Party senatorial candidate for Enugu East; Dr Dons Udeh, Chief Sunday Ugwu, Hon Gabriel Onuzurike, former chairman of Oji River; many security agents, among others, whose killers were never arrested for prosecution.

He expressed worries for residents of the state. He recalled that he was also a victim of such attack when he was the state chairman of APC, revealing that his police orderly was shot but survived by the whiskers.

He said, “Gov Peter Mbah gave the killers of Mr Aniagu 48 hours. It has elapsed and nothing has happened. If police are tired of their duties, let them quit. These murder cases are not being investigated.

“In my case, I gave names of the suspects, but they were never invited for interrogations. Mbah’s order for the apprehension of Mr Aniagu’s killers did not have rewards. The police and the citizenry are not helping matters.”

He regretted that many incidents of assassination are more in Nkanu land of Enugu State. He said, “Aniagu, Udeh, Oyibo Chukwu, Sunday Ugwu are all from Nkanu land. Police end up conducting lazy Investigations. They should do diligent work instead of simply collecting money on the roads.

“If people are afraid to reveal these criminals, we don’t know who is next. There should be a phone number which people can unanimously call to give intelligence reports.”
