Prospective Voters Appeal For Extension Of Voter Registration

Prospective voters, Tuesday, appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the just-concluded voter registration.

Recall that the exercise formally came to end on Sunday.

Okoye Odo, an Enugu resident, said, “It’s sad I couldn’t register despite all the efforts I made. It was either that the machines malfunctioned or there was no network. I beg them to consider millions of us who tried, but did not succeed.”

Respondents to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) pleaded with the electoral body for an extension in view of the prospective voters that were unable to register.

Meanwhile, the INEC commissioner in charge of voter education and registration, Mr Festus Okoye, Monday, clarified that the exercise would not be extended, noting that INEC is engaged in many activities related to the 2023 general elections.

Staff members have been on this assignment for the past one year and one month, that is, since June 2021 functioning Monday to Sunday, Okoye said.

According to him, the people who could not be registered did not show up early enough as the rush was as a result of the deadline.

He said that during the exercise, over 28 million people visited INEC’s online platform online.

“The commission has concluded the continuous voter registration exercise nationwide,” he affirmed.
