A 32-year-old man, from Ugwulangwu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has become the first victim of monkeypox in the state.
He resides in Abakaliki, the state commissioner for health, Dr Daniel Umezuruike, said on Monday.
Ebonyi State has therefore become the 19th state in Nigeria to record the case of the virus.
The health commissioner said the victim recently visited River State, and might have contracted the infection there.
He said the patient developed symptoms of the virus on his return to Abakaliki.
According to him, the 32-year-old is presently receiving treatment at an isolation centre located at the Unity Square, Abakaliki.
Quoting him, “Thirty-two suspected cases are being monitored while seven contacts with the index case had been enlisted for tracing.”
Umezuruike called on residents of the state to be cautious, and ‘apply safety precautions as transmissions can occur through human to human as well as animal to man’.
