A total number of 6,000 farmers across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State are to benefit from the second phase of the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES).

The scheme is in partnership between the Enugu State government, federal government and the World Bank. The programme seeks to mitigate the effects of COVID-I9 crisis on the livelihood of the poor and vulnerable farmers, Grace Okenwa, public relations officer, Enugu Fadama Project, said in a release weekend.

Recall that the state project coordinator, Mr Jude Ogboke, in a recent meeting with the project management and community facilitators, said the Fadama project was implementing the Result Area 2 of the NG-CARES programme in Enugu State.

He explained that the Result Area 2, which Enugu Fadama is facilitating, aims at increasing food security and safe functioning of food supply chains.

Mr Ogboke said the project was providing inputs and assets support to farmers ‘who were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic’, saying that most farmers suffered huge losses in their farming activities as a result of the lockdown.

According to him, the project had already supported a total of 1,170 farmers in the first phase, adding that ‘the farmers were drawn from six local government areas of the state. The affected LGAs, he stated, are Aninri, Isi-Uzo, Udenu, Nsukka, Ezeagu and Nkanu East.

Our correspondent reports that the beneficiaries received production assets and inputs support, such as bags of fertilizers, agro-chemicals, bundles of cassava stem, cassava graters, cassava peelers, communal fryers, knapsack sprayers, rice threshers, mini rice mills, rice destoners, multipurpose grinders and water pumps.
