The UN Working Group on Human Rights Violation says the ordeal Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is passing through is because of his activism toward a referendum for the Sovereign State of Biafra.
This was contained in the UN report on Kanu seen by our correspondent.
According to the report, “As Mr. Kanu has been targeted on account of his activism in galvanising momentum for a referendum on the sovereignty of Biafra, the Working Group considers that his detention violates articles 2 and 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights …”
Kanu is standing trail before Justice Binta Nyako of an FCT Federal High Court on alleged jumping bail, running a proscribed group and treason.
Kanu’s international counsel, Mr Bruce Fein, about three weeks ago, announced that the UN Working Group on Human Rights had ordered Nigeria to release Kanu with immediate effect.
Although the federal government is yet to react to the order, the Coalition of Northern Groups some days ago asked the federal government to ignore the order. The group is led by Abdulazeez Suleiman.
However, Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has warned about the consequences of ignoring the order.
He tweeted, “The infamous extraordinary rendition of #MNK was the first MISHANDLING. Putting him on trial was the second.
“Refusing him bail despite the Umuahia judgment was the third. Any refusal to release him as was directed by the United Nations will surely open a hornets nest.”
Kanu’s family, in a release signed by Kanunta Kanu, described disobeying the order as ‘suicidal’.
According to him, “Such action will be suicidal, if not now, then later. If they doubt, they should go ask Sani Abacha how he reduced Nigeria to a pariah State through a similar acts of State lawlessness that the CNG is now demanding.
“They should ask their lawyers (if they have any) about the tenor, reach and inviolability of Opinions.”
