A gang of bandits killed one immigration officer and wounded two other officers in an ambush along Maigatari in Jigawa and Niger Republic boarders, our correspondent in Dutse gathered on Thursday.
The officers were swooped during a routine patrol, Jigawa state comptroller of immigration, ACG Isma’ila Abba Aliyu, said. According to him, the ambush happened at Galadi-Birniwa around 11:20 pm on Tuesday.
Galadi-Birniwa is a border village in Birniwa local government of Jigawa State.
Aliyu said the bandits rode on two motorcycles, adding that one of them carried three passengers while the other was carrying two passengers.
Quoting him, “They suddenly upon arrival opened fire on the immigration staff on patrol, which resulted in the death of one of the staff while two others sustained serious bullet wounds.
“Three other officers who were on the patrol team managed to escape as they took shelter in a nearby forest till early morning on Wednesday.
“As a result of heavy exchange of fire, the bandits fled into the bush, and abandoned their motorcycles and a handset (Techno T5) belonging to the bandits. They were recovered and handed over to the state police command for further investigation.
“I can confirm to you that the attackers were from Niger Republic because the village is less than two kilometres to Niger Republic and over 70 kilometres from Maigatari town in Jigawa state.”
