Personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps conniving with vandals and oil thieves will not be spared, the commandant general of the corps (NSCDC), Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, warned Friday.
Audi said the step became necessary to reverse the ugly the act had given to the corps.
He said since the corps is saddled with the responsibility of protecting petroleum pipelines and other oil installations across the country, ‘it behoves on personnel to live up to expectations’.
He stated this at a meeting of NSCDC stakeholders going on in Abuja.
He said, “Oil is the mainstay of Nigera’s economy and the massive oil theft and illegal bunkering in the country is alarming.
“There are indications that some of the anti-vandal units in some state commands have been found wanting. This dangerous development is inimical to the image of the corps.
“As heads of anti-vandal units, you are expected to display a high sense of responsibility to duties. The corps has no space for mediocrity, and will therefore not hesitate to deal with any officer found wanting.
“Members of the anti-vandal squad must re-dedicate themselves to our collective goal to checkmate crimes and eradicate incidences of oil theft/oil bunkering and vandalization of oil pipelines and other critical national assets and infrastructure.”
Audi said the corps had commenced investigations into the activities of the anti-vandal squads across states, and those found culpable would be sanctioned.
