A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man Sunday night slumped and died after arriving at Nsukka from Onitsha. He was said to be travelling alongside his wife to his country home at Ibagwa in Igboeze South local government area of Enugu State when he died in front of Ifesinachi garage at Nsukka.
An eyewitness said, “They arrived late in the evening in a commercial bus. From the interaction between them and the driver of the bus, there was a shortfall in the transport fare they were supposed to pay the driver. The driver had angrily collected their phone and drove off.
“I was told that the man was not feeling fine, and had pleaded to the driver to wait for him to call a relative to settle the fare, but the driver did not wait. At the point he collected the phone, the man was said to have slumped, and was later found motionless. His wife slept beside his corpse all through the night.”
His wife was in tears, as she tried to explain their journey. She said, “This is the first time I’m going to my husband’s country home. We have been married for many years, with three children. But he has never taken us to his village. He is from Ibagwa or Obukpa. I don’t even know where to begin because I don’t know the road to his village, and the phone we were using to connect his people had been seized by the driver.”
She said they live at Atani in Anambra State. According to her, her husband was not feeling fine, but ‘not to the extent of dying this way’.

As at the time of filing this report, his remains were still lying by the roadside. His wife was about leaving to report the incident to Nsukka police station. Police patrol vans were however passing by without showing concerns.
