The Eastern Union, Thursday, said it had identified with Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike on his stand that there should be a power balance between the North and the South in the Peoples Democratic Party.
Recall that there has been love-lost in the party following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate, and the refusal of Senator Iyorcha Ayu to resign as chairman of PDP to pave way for the emergence of a southerner as chairman.
Against this background, EU, a pro-democracy and good governance group, stated in a release signed by its national chairman, Charles Anike, that, “The charade conducted by Sen Ayu has been generating controversies due to the tribal gang-up and bigotry employed and some other unethical methods that helped Atiku Abubakar to emerge as the standard-bearer.
“Prior to the conduct of the primary, the PDP stakeholders were said to have reached a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that wherever the presidential flagbearer emerges from will automatically give up the national chairmanship of the party to the other side.
“But funnily, after Atiku emerged, as it were, he added insult to injury by not only reneging on the agreement, but also rejected the committee report, which favoured Gov Wike against Gov Ifeanyi Okowa (as his VP).
“Okowa betrayed the southern governors by secretly working for Atiku’s emergence after he hosted the southern governors on the agreement that power must shift to South come 2023.
“We at Eastern Union therefore stand to lend our unflinching support to Gov Nysom Wike to ensure that justice, fairness and decorum become the watchwords in our political system.
“Records show that Atiku Abubakar does not keep to agreements, as he over the years maintained rigidly. It is either he or no-one-else attitude in his political career.
“This accounted for Atiku’s disloyalty to his superior contemporaries. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo still regrets ever having Atiku as his vice during his reign. This is, according to Chief Obasanjo, Atiku’s stylish kind of insubordination and inordinate ambitions.
“Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s experiences with Atiku wee worse, as he later pulled out of the PDP with some of his loyalists to bring Buhari to power. All these therefore mean that whatever Atiku may be going through in hands of Gov Wike and his G5 governors is Karma at work.
“Whatsoever a man sows, so shall he reap. The PDP presidential candidate should within his conscience know that his greed for power and unbridled political ambitions had led him to cross the red lines of other of his contemporaries’ political calculations.
“And it is always like that when a person is overtaken by greed for power or anything else. Such a person should never be trusted. Any person who does not keep to agreement is a very dangerous person and must be avoided.
“The PDP is marketing expired products and clearly Nigerians are resisting them and will continue to resist them.
“EU will continue to stand with Wike and his Comrade governors against every form of intimidations and discriminations.”
