A popular masquerade, called Akatakpa, was Thursday knocked down by a commercial motorcycle operator.
The incident occurred at Nkwo, Ezimo, Udenu local government area of Enugu State. The masqurade was said to have been on the main road alongside other masquerades and their flutists when the incident occurred.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Caje, said, “It was a hard hit. The masquerade fell flat. The commercial motorcyclist even ran across him, injuring the masquerade’s groin in the process. He must be in hospital because he was in pains.”
Another eyewitness said, “The masquerade is guilty. He went and stood in front of the motorcycle. Maybe the rider did not apply brake or he was carried away. The Okada fell with his passengers. They too sustained injuries.”
A resident of the community, Emma Eze, advised masquerades to be careful with their operations.
According to him, “They should be cautious. These masquerades are for entertainment. But recently, they begin to be excess. If you don’t give them money, they disturb you. Some also go after women on bike.
“However, our own (akatakpa) are relatively peaceful. They do everything moderately. But they need to be cautious.”
