Unknown gunmen suspected to be enforcing the sit-at-home order by the self-styled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mr Simon Ekpa, yesterday attacked the country home of Barr Aloy Ejimakor in Imo State.
Ejimakor is the special counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB.
Ejimakor, in a tweet, stated that, “Today, 9th December 2022 (yesterday), several armed men invaded my hometown, attacked my relatives, vandalized their properties and set fire to our main market, five minutes away from my house.
“It’s a day that will forever live in infamy. I’m very upset; my people are very upset.”
Mr Ekpa, a Finland-based immigration consultant, had declared 9th to 14th December sit-at-home to create awareness for non-particpation of the people of the South East in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections.
His order has been condemned by many Igbo stakeholders. IPOB, in a statement by its head of media, Mr Emma Powerful, told the people of the region to disregard the order.
According to Powerful, “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great prophet and indefatigable liberator Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu wishes to state unequivocally to the people of Biafra, friends of Biafra, and lovers of Biafra freedom that IPOB leadership did not issue any sit-at-home order on 9th,10th, 11th, 12th, 13th or 14th of December 2022.
“IPOB never issued any sit-at-home order on these days mentioned above because we are not miscreants, senseless, or jobless people.
“Every Biafran and residents in Biafra Land should ignore such order from untrained and brainless individuals whose agenda is to make Biafra agitation unattractive to our people. Every Biafran must go to their normal business on those days.”
Kanu is currently in the custody of the DSS and being prosecuted over alleged running a proscribed group, jumping bail and treason.
