Dr Emeka Aroh, a staunch supporter of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2023, claims former President Olusegun Obasano endorsed Mr Peter Obi for personal reasons. He added that ‘history will never forgive Obasajo’ for some ordeals meted to Ndigbo in the past.
Aroh spoke during a programme monitored by our correspondent in Enugu on Tuesday. He said, “We should look at the dynamics of Nigeria’s politics. The people that put us at the background are now jumping up to say they want an Igbo president. We might not have witnessed the war, but history never forgives.
“Obasanjo has his reasons for the endorsement. It doesn’t make any difference in the dynamics of this election. But the Labour Party is not organised. They could not constitute a presidential election committee. The chances of Atiku Abubakar keep increasing because of his acceptance. The election in 2023 will be out of parties.”
On his take on a northerner continuing as president after President Muhammadu Buhari, Aroh said, “It is party politics. Consider party primaries where the outcomes of one party determine the strategies of another party. We may end up shooting ourselves in the leg, which can lead the APC to lead Nigeria another eight years. President Obasanjo should only give fatherly advice.
“We know the reasons why he is endorsing the way he endorses. He knows why he doesn’t want to endorse Atiku Abubakar. He endorsed Atiku in 2019, but we can deduce his personal reasons for that.
“Southeast is right to become the president of Nigeria. Atiku promised to hand over to an Igbo man. Atiku was ready to step aside if PDP zoned it to Southeast. Politics is about contestation. They said South, which was a blanket arrangement.”
Recall that Obasanjo, in his New Year letter addressed to Nigerian youths, urged them to vote Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential elections.
