The candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) for Awka North and Awka South federal constituency in Anambra state in the 2023 general election, Chief Kingsley Chukwudozie Uyammadu, has said that Nigeria is currently under serious siege, and requires very serious intervention to save it from total collapse.
Uyammadu said that the 2023 general elections would provide the country with rare opportunity to get things right, by electing good leaders with capacity, character, competence and compassion, adding that if the opportunity is missed, the country might be heading for total collapse.
He made the assertion Monday while addressing members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra state council at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Center, NUJ Secretariat, Awka, Anambra state.
The House of Representatives hopeful observed that what kept Nigeria down was the insensitivity of political leadership.
He said, “Representation is about good leadership. A majority of the people in elective positions do not have what it takes to represent the people. They do not have the interest of the people at heart. This is why the country is presently under siege.
“Legislation needs people who understand what law-making entails. People that feel the pains of citizens should be elected to occupy political and leadership positions. This is why people like us leave our exalted businesses to contest this position, and bring good governance down to our people.”
Uyammadu, who said that journalists have big roles to play in promoting good governance, urged media practitioners to use their powers as watchdogs to promote people with requisite leadership qualities, and market them to the electorate.
He promised that if elected, he would champion a legislative framework that would promote good governance, and quality life for Nigerian people. He also regretted that for the past 20 years, people of Awka North, where he comes from, have not represented the federal constituency in the House of Representatives, and urged the people to observe equity, justice and fair play in sharing political offices in the constituency.
Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of NUJ, Anambra state council, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, described Uyammadu as a quality material for political representation. He also assured him that the council would ensure that it remains fair to all political parties and candidates involved in the electoral process.
