The truck driver that caused the death of six occupants of an intra-city bus Thursday morning is on the run, the Enugu State Police Command said.
According to the state police public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, “frantic investigative efforts are being made to arrest the yet-to-be identified driver of the truck, who fled the scene before the arrival of the police.”
Meanwhile, the state commissioner of police, CP Ahmed Ammani, has commiserated with families and friends of those that lost their lives in the fatal accident.
Our correspodent reports that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace commercial bus and a Howo-Sino truck on 09/03/2023 at about 9.20am at CBN Bus Stop, along Enugu/Onitsha expressway, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu.
The commissioner, while describing the accident as avoidable, prayed for the eternal repose of the souls of the deceased victims. He cautioned road users, particularly drivers, ‘to exercise utmost patience and care while driving, and desist from reckless and/or dangerous driving that could put their lives and those of their passengers in danger’, the PPRO stated.
Ndukwe said the CP had ordered the officer-in-charge of the command’s Motor Traffic Department to commence investigations into the accident to aid further policing actions.
He said, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the commercial bus, with registration number: XL 884 ENU, driven by one Simon Umeh (male) and loaded with five passengers, was heading to New Market, Enugu, when it had a head-on-collision with the truck coming from the opposite direction, while attempting to overtake a smoky vehicle ahead.
“The lifeless bodies of the driver and the five passengers were taken to the hospital and confirmed dead by doctors, and their corpses deposited in the mortuary for preservation. Also, the accident vehicles have been recovered to the police station.”
