A former appointee of the Imo State government, one Dr Batos Chikezie Nwadike, was earlier yesterday arrested in Owerri, Imo State, by Nigeria Police and taken to Abuja.
Chief Nwadike was until recently an official of Imo government. He was however relieved of his post under controversial circumstances that included government security agents forcibly retrieving his official car from him.
His arrest yesterday came on the heels of a viral audio he allegedly produced accusing former Imo Governor Ikedi Ohakim of channelling one mllion dollars to Labour Party delegates to buy their votes for the nomination of Senator Athan Achonu as Labour Party guber candidate in the upcoming Imo guber elections. The senator was after the primary declared the winner.
The audio was said to have provoked a backlash against former Governor Ohakim amongst Labour Party faithful, and it was alleged to have been directed at tarnishing Ohakim’s reputation, thus prompting his direct complaint to the police that ultimately resulted in the arrest of Nwadike.
The suspect is currently being detained at Force Headquarters, Abuja, and may be charged to court as early as Monday, according to police sources familiar with the matter.
Efforts are being to hear from the camp of the embattled Nwadike.
