The national president, Human Rights Volunteer Corps of Nigeria, Mr Larry Oguego, Wednesday, charged both Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to rise to the expectations of Nigerian masses by holding government accountable.

Oguego spoke at a programme in Enugu. He berated NLC and TUC for lacking proactivenes in the face of hardship imposed on Nigerians by President Bola Tinubu through the removal of fuel subsidy without measures to cushion the effects.

According to him, “Nigerians expect the organised Labour to be more proactive. Nigerians are already disillusioned. Organised Labour should go beyond just negotiations, and start holding the government accountable.”

On the ongoing palliatives being distributed across the federation, Oguego said, “We want to remind ourselves that some interests in the country made petroleum refining impossible. They ensure that crude is exported, but the quantity accounted for can’t be quantified. We have become the poverty capital of the world. Palliatives are a measure for promoting poverty across the federation. When you give someone a mudu of rice, and not teaching him how to plant rice, you are simply encouraging poverty. It is giving people the mindset of poverty.”

The federal government had approved N5bn as palliative for the removal of fuel subsidy. It was reported that so far, a tranche of N2bn had been released to states.
