The Ohanaeze NdĂgbo Worldwide has been charged to midwife the creation of an additional state in the Southeast to enable the region to have six states as their counterparts across the geopolitical regions of the country.
The charge was made by a former head of Department of Business Law, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Dr Chijioke Agbo.
He was reacting to news making the rounds that the Tinubu administration is considering creating more states.
Our correspondent reports that all the geopolitical zones in the country have six states each, with Northwest having seven while Southeast has only five. Since the news filtered of a possible state creation by the Tinubu adminstration, many interest groups have been drumming support for the creation of Adada and Njama states in the Southeast.
Dr Agbo advised Ohanaeze to synch all the groups agitating for state creation in the region to make them speak with one voice.
In his words, “There is injustice against the Southeast region in the current state structure. Therefore, Ohanaeze should do more. There seems to be discordant voices which Ohanaeze should midwife with the synergy of Southeast governors. We understand the political expediency for the location of such state. Adada agitators have been vocal. Njaba has also been vocal. There is also agitators for Equity State. It is all about political interest.
“It will be fair that one more state is created in Southeast to make the region come at par with other regions except Northwest. It ought to be before the quest for more states across the country is considered. After the sixth state, we then talk about levelling up if more states are to be created in all zones.”
He said President Bola Tinubu would make history if his administration created an additional state in Southeast. In his words, “States have hitherto been created through military fiats and based on interests. Giving one more state in the Southeast will usher in equity in job recruitment, political appointments, legislative representations, and a sense of belonging.
“Creation of states has never been based on economic viability. Any state created in Southeast will enjoy cultural homogeneity, but the agitators should come with one voice.”
