The Federal High Court has issued a notice to Mr Yusuf Magaji Bichi, the director general of the State Security Services, warning him about the consequences of disobeying a court order issued on the visitation of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal High Court.

The order, made available to Adadareporters, weekend, by Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, warned the DG that such violations could commit him to prison.

It reads, “Take notice that unless you obey the directions contained in this Order, you will be guilty of Contempt of Court, and will be liable to be committed to prison.”

Recall that on 20th May 2024, while refusing Kanu’s application to restore his bail in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court, the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, entered an Order modifying the conditions of counsel visitations to Kanu.

This modified Order was aimed at expanding the opportunity for Kanu’s lawyers to adequately prepare him for trial in a way that would ensure that he gets a fair trial.

The court ordered that Kanu be permitted by the State Security Services to meet with up to five of his lawyers, and that such consultation be done in a “clean” room at the State Security Services where Kanu is currently detained.

Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, is facing trial on alleged jumping bail and treason. Despite the Supreme Court’s verdict that he did not jump bail when the apex court decided that he be tried at a Federal High Court, Abuja, even after admitting that the manner Kanu was renditioned to Nigeria from Kenya in 2021 violated international rules, the Federal High Court has insisted trying him on alleged jumping bail in 2017.

Our correspondent reports that the Supreme Court held that Kanu was forced to flee the country by Nigeria’s military despite that he was on bail.
