The commissioner of police, Enugu State Command, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the State CID to conduct a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances of the alleged shooting and murder of one Chinedu Edeh by a police officer at Echara Road, Nsukka, in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, it was gathered, happened on June 23, 2024. The CP charged the deputy commissioner to ensure that everyone implicated, especially the police officer alleged to have shot the victim, faced the full weight of the law.
Meanwhile, the commissioner has consoled the family and friends of the deceased, who was taken to the hospital and confirmed dead by doctors, with his corpse being deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
He urged them to maintain calm, assuring that necessary police actions would be taken to ensure that justice prevailed.
Premium Times quoted a source alleging that, “A team of plain-clothed officers had gone to hang out at a recreation centre in the area. One of the officers reportedly began to dance with a woman, suspected to be a commercial sex worker at the centre.
“The woman, it was gathered, later accused the officer of fondling her breasts while they were dancing, resulting in an altercation. The woman subsequently reported the officer to the manager of the centre, who also engaged the officer in a heated argument, leading to a fight between them.
“Some of the other police operatives rose to separate the duo. In the ensuing scuffle, one of the officers reportedly pulled out an AK-47 rifle from their vehicle and shot sporadically, probably to disperse the crowd that had gathered during the incident.”
The source added that a stray bullet hit the victim, who was playing snooker at a corner of the centre at the time of the incident, resulting in a violent protest by angry youths in the area.
