Contrary to media reports that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, agreed to abide by ‘any condition’ for his release from detention, his legal team has clarified the true position.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Barr Aloy Ejimakor, via his X handle, stated that, “The news that he will abide by ‘any conditions’ for his release is incorrect. What was meant is that he will abide by the ‘NEGOTIATED terms’ of his release and on other matters related thereto, such as was also agreed in August 2017.”
Ejimakor was reacting to media reports credited to Sen Enyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia South to the effect that Kanu had accepted to abide by ‘any condition’.
The report had it that Kanu agreed to comply with the conditions set by President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government for his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Senator Abaribe reportedly stated it after a recent meeting between the South-East senators and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), on Kanu’s release.
Abaribe had led 15 federal lawmakers in the closed-door meeting between AGF and the South-East senators.
He emphasised that Kanu’s prolonged detention was contributing to heightened insecurity and unrest in the South-East region.
Senator Abaribe was reported to have said that he had personally met with Kanu at the DSS headquarters, where Kanu expressed readiness to comply with any conditions set by the government for his release.
Kanu has been in detention since 2021 after being renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria by Nigeria’s secret security agents.
