Mr Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has declared support for the nationwide hunger protests slated from August 1 to 10, 2024.
The protests are against abject poverty and hunger visited to millions of Nigerians by various policies of President Bola Tinubu, including the removal of petroleum products subsidies, devaluation of naira and flamboyant living styles of the country’s leaders.
Obi made his position known after his meeting with Abia State governor Alex Otti on Sunday. He however emphasized the need for orderliness during the protests.
He called on security agencies to respect the rights of the protesters and handle the situation within the extant laws.
Quoting him, “Protest is a constitutional right in Nigeria. I urge the protesters to act lawfully and civilly, demonstrating that we are a nation governed by law. The economic situation is tough, and it’s crucial to listen to the grievances of the people.”
On the allegations that he is sponsoring the protests, Obi said, “The true sponsors are the hunger and hopelessness felt by the youth. We must acknowledge and address these issues.”
He also advised security operatives to manage the situation without excessive force.
