The Anambra State Police Command, Tuesday, confirmed the bombing of a divisional police headquarters in the state.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred Tuesday morning at Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and the nearby Oba Civic Center. The attack claimed the life of a police corporal, our correspondent heard.
According to the state police command, a joint security force comprising the police, army, navy, and civil defence are currently in a joint onslaught operation within Oba and its environments to arrest the attackers.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets in a desperate bid to breach the police station’s defences.
His statement read that, “The suspected armed group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the police station; they threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire, including the Oba Civic Center.
“Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price. The fire was put off with the help of other police officers on duty and the joint security responding team.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, in the statement, condemned the act, “calling the assault on security facilities an attack on the very essence of the nation.”
He pledged to pursue justice and ensure that those responsible for this atrocity were brought to book.
