2024 Press Week committee of the NUJ Enugu State Council has been inaugurated with a call by the Council Chairman, Comrade Sam Udekwe for members to ensure the efficiency and success of the activities therein.
The Chairman inaugurated the seven man Committee, Chaired by an Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria and facilitator of FirstNews, an online news platform, Comrade Emmanuel Ikechukwu Jonathan, JP, Esq, who is equally the Vice Chairman of Corporate Online Chapel, Enugu.
Comrade Udekwe also said that this year’s Press week will have a consultant, Dr. Ambrose Igboke, who would work with the Committee to ensure the success of the programme.
The Secretary of the Committee is Comrade Ignatius Okpara, the immediate past Vice Chairman of Correspondents’ Chapel.
Other members of the Committee are Comrade Ifesinachi Ugwueze-Financial Secretary of FRCN Chapel, Comrade
Charity Onu -State Information Chapel/PRO Enugu State Housing Corporation, Comrade
Chibuzo Nwoye-ESBS,
Comrade Ralph Yambo of Eco News and
Comrade Lilian Nwaonyeali of Private Broadcast Chapel.
Comrade Udekwe emphasized that the hard work of the Committee will bring about the desired success of the activities of the Press Week.
He said that the council would not leave the Committee alone but provide the members with necessary materials and support, charging them to source for sponsors of the Press week and funds for welfare of members.
He mandated them to also search for those who have distinguished themselves in their different fields of endeavour to be honoured during the week.
Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Comrade Ikechukwu Jonathan commended the leadership of NUJ for finding him and his team worthy to oversee to the execution of the 2024 NUJ Press week.
He stressed the importance of a peaceful union where members work in harmony and project the overall interests of the union.
He said, “this Press week will foundationally advocate peace and reconciliation among the members because united we stand and divided we fall,”.
Jonathan who was a media aide to the immediate past Governor of Enugu State, solicited supports from members of the union so as to ensure that the Press week comes out successful adding that, “members are free to recommend possible sponsors and they will be entitled to their due appreciation.
The Chairman of the committee said that the Press week would come up with programmes that would expose members of the union to a medical outreach for proper medical examination and treatment.
Comrade Jonathan said that the committee would source for high profiled intellectual personality as the Guest Speaker for the Press week on a well chosen topic that would center on the way we do our job and carry ourselves as journalists.
“The Press week will expose us on international best practices regarding the way we do our job as professionals, look into the health of members while conducting medical examinations to avert untimely death,” Jonathan said.
He called on all members of the union to show unflinching support for the Press week as it would be highly interesting and educative.
