The Enugu State Police Command, Tuesday, said a lecturer of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who was kidnapped on Oct 26, 2028 along Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road escaped from his abductors.
According to the police, the lecturer escaped during a gun duel between his abductors and police operatives who engaged the kidnappers on a separate kidnap attempt.
The state police public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said the operation that led to the escape of the lecturer occurred on Monday at about 7pm.
It was gathered that the abductors, after an intense gun duel, fled with gunshot wounds, abandoning one AK-47 rifle, two magazines containing a total of twenty-two rounds, and a chain of thirty-nine live ammunition.
Ndukwe stated that, “Further operations to hunt down the fleeing suspects the same night led to a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, reportedly kidnapped on October 26, 2024, escaping from his abductors’ custody.”
Ndukwe affirmed that Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road is unsafe for travellers, urging the general public to disregard “the unfounded
products of scaremongering.”
He also debunked an alleged kidnap of an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps on the same route last Saturday. According to him, no such incident occurred.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the deployment of additional personnel and resources to bolster both overt and covert police operations along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road, reassuring the public of security and safety on the road and across the state.
