The government of Enugu State has proposed N10bn for the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) security cameras at strategic locations to combat crimes in the state.
The state Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr Chris-Roberts Ozongwu, disclosed the sum weekend after a breakdown of the state’sq 2025 budget estimates.
Our correspondent reported that Gov Peter Mbah during his last town-hall meeting had said security was among the priorities of his government to guarantee investment in the state.
Mr Ozongwu said that the high-tech CCTV security cameras and their searchlights would be located at strategic bus stops, junctions and densely populated areas and major highways in the state.
The cameras would be linked to a centralised monitoring system to effectively monitor and coordinate the entire security system in the state, he added.
He said the initiative was in line with Gov Mbah’s pledge to make Enugu State the safest state in Nigeria.
Quoting him, “The government will also spend N5bn for the procurement of official and security vehicles in 2025. This will complement the already-huge investment in over 100 security vehicles in the state.
“There will be another N1bn for upgrading and equipping Enugu State Security Outfit (training and retraining of security personnel, procurement of vehicles for security monitoring), among others.”
The commissioner further revealed that the state government had proposed N20bn to purchase 1,000 tractors and other implements to promote mechanised farming.
According to him, “The state will be spending N52.5bn for clearing and development of 100,000 hectares of land for three Special Crop Processing Zones. The state is to spend N1bn on revamping its tractor leasing company and N2bn for the construction of farm estates across the state, among others.”
