A private driver identified as Mallam Awal Yakubu, Thursday, bagged three months’ jail term for attempting to flee with an operative of the Federal Road Safety Corps who accosted him over dangerous driving.

Yakubu, from Bauchi State, was found guilty of dangerous driving and driving without a driving licence.

He was driving his Galaxy Ford with registration number TRR 214 JU, and travelling from Makurdi to Bauchi, when he was arrested, according to the state Sector Public Enlightenment Officer, Mr John Nwankwo. Nwankwo added that the convict refused to obey orders of the FRSC operatives on duty, leading to his attempt to evade arrest.

He was found guilty by His Worship Ramatu of Chief Magistrate’s Court 3, Lafia, that presided over the mobile court that tried him, it was gathered.

According to Nwankwo, “Yakubu was arrested for driving dangerously and attempting to flee with one of the arresting marshals. He was charged with dangerous driving (DGD) and driving without a licence (DLV). The court, presided over by His Worship Ramatu, sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment with an option to pay a fine of N60,000.”

Our correspondent reports that Yakubu’s failure to meet the fine option led to his being remanded at the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Lafia.
