The Athletic reported earlier this week that Strakosha was on the cusp of signing a four-year deal after his contract with Lazio expired.
Strakosha had attracted interest from Manchester United, but it is understood the 27-year-old wanted to be in contention for a first-team spot and to live in London.
It comes amid doubts over David Raya’s long-term future. Raya and his representatives held a meeting with Brentford in May to discuss the terms of a new deal, but the 26-year-old has not accepted their initial offer.
However, it is understood both sides are keen for him to stay at the club and will continue to hold talks to find a positive solution. Raya’s current contract is due to expire in 2024.
Raya joined Brentford from Blackburn in August 2019 on a four-year contract for a fee believed to be worth around £3 million. He signed an extension in October 2020 before he helped them get promoted to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.
Despite being ruled out for four months with a serious knee injury, Raya played an integral role in helping Brentford to avoid relegation and finish 13th in the top-flight last season.
He was called up to Spain’s squad for the first time in March in recognition of his performances and made his debut in a 2-1 victory over Albania. (The Athletic)
