Socio-cultural leaders in the South East, South-South, South West and North have supported the impeachment notice passed on President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to curb insecurity, saying he should have been impeached earlier than now.
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) said the move by the Senate to serve notice of impeachment on President Muhammadu Buhari was only ‘belated’ but ’empty’.
Speaking in Port Harcourt yesterday, PANDEF national publicity secretary, Ken Robinson, said the security situation in the country had been steadily deteriorating.
“The impeachment threat by the Senate to President Muhammadu Buhari is belated. It’s coming later than it should have been.
“More so, it is an empty threat. This leadership of the Senate and indeed the 9th National Assembly does not possess the nerve to make good on that threat.
“The state of insecurity in the country has been steadily deteriorating, but the lawmakers have been docile just as the President has been.
“The reality before us is that the security architecture has been compromised, with evident complicity by security agents and officials of the government,” he said.
He pointed at two attacks in the FCT as evidence of insider complicity.
“A few days ago, a detachment of the elite Presidential Guards was ambushed in the Federal Capital Territory, with reported casualties. Earlier, it was the brazen jailbreak at the Kuje Correctional Centre, also in the FCT.
“Years ago, it would have been unimaginable that such things could happen, in Nigeria, especially in the Federal Capital Territory. Sadly, in the face of these absurdities, we were informed of Mr. President’s trip to Liberia to speak on security issues. What drivel!
“It’s unfortunate that they have allowed the senseless monsters to graduate from the criminals, armed herders and kidnappers they initially camouflaged as, to the real terrorists and extremists that they are.
“Nonetheless, the way out is known, maybe, complicated. The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria should do his job. Enough of pretensions and double standards.”
On its part, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) said it had lost confidence in the lawmakers
AYCF national president, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, said, “The Senate has not done enough; we expect them to have taken better action before now. What is the six weeks for when we see deaths on a daily basis?
“The National Assembly needs to sit up; for me, I don’t have confidence in them because this is what should have been done a very long time ago. All we see and hear is promises every now and then with no action.
“The security situation in Nigeria is worrisome and needs more proactive measures to bring it to an end than threat of impeachment, it requires concerted efforts to end it from all and sundry before it consumes us all,” he said.
Acting leader of the Pan Yoruba socio -political organisation, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, said the group was in support of the senators.
Chief Adebanjo said, “If they serve him notice of impeachment, that means he should go. His impeachment is long overdue; he should have been impeached over one year ago. The fact that they served him notice of impeachment means lack of confidence in him; he should go; it is a minus for him.
‘’It is a minus for him from the Senate; he should have been sent away over a year ago. The action is coming too late. Law and order have broken down in this country. When the commander-in-chief of the armed forces cannot protect himself, criminals are now threatening his own guards and there is no reaction from the president to confront the criminals. -should we now wait until the whole country is wiped off?’’
For Ohaneze Ndigbo the threat by senators to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari over insecurity in the country is a welcome development.
Ohanaeze spokesman , Alex Ogbonnia , said everyone is now feeling the insecurity in the country.
He said it was a welcome development that the lawmakers are now beginning to live up to expectations.
Ogbonnia said the increasing rate of insecurity in the country is now open for everybody to see.
