Nnamdi Kanu remains ‘upbeat and strong against all odds’, says Kanu’s special counsel, Barr Aloy Ejimakor, after visiting him on Monday.
Ejimakor stated this via his Twitter handle.
Quoting him, “A few minutes ago, I ended a visitation with Onyendu #MNK. He remains upbeat & strong against all odds. Like Nelson Mandela & other greats before him, he has shown mettle & strength of character. He asks that all faithfuls be guided by mutual respect for one another & loyalty.”
Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. He is being detained at the custody of the Department of State Services over alleged running a proscribed group, jumping bail and treason.
He was forcefully brought into Nigeria from Kenya last year in an operation carried out by the combined forces of Kenya and Nigeria. However, the manner he was brought in has been described as ‘extra-ordinary rendition’, having violated international laws, his special counsel had argued.
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has however ordered the immediate release of Kanu, asserting that he was exercising his fundamental human rights in pressing for a referendum to decide the actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
An Umuahia High Court earlier this year ruled that Kanu did not jump bail in 2017. The suit was filed by Barr Ejimakor. The court also awarded damages against the federal government.
