Barr Ugochukwu Agballa is a grass-roots mobiliser and shouldn’t be distracted in his moves to make All Progressives Congress emerge victorious in the 2023 elections in Enugu State.
This is the verdict of Barr Ben Onwusi, Wednesday, when he featured on the DreamFM political programme in Enugu.
Onwusi said moves by some political stakeholders in the state to remove Agballa as the state chairman of APC would be ‘counter-productive’, describing them as ‘generals without troops’.
According to him, “Such stakeholders were with us over the years and we won no single election. They have taken us nowhere. These chieftains are not known in their wards.”
He was reacting to a group, comprising Chief Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu, former Senate president Ken Nnamani, and the minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, who met with the national working committee of APC asking it to remove Agballa.
It was gathered that the trio had in a petition to the Abdullahi Adamu-led national working committee (NWC) of APC demanded the removal of Barr Agballa aimed at repositioning the party ahead of the 2023 polls.
According to them, “The party is imploding and on the brink of collapse. It is in no position, as things stand, to be competitive in the general elections.
“The leaders now believe that a radical solution is required to save the state chapter of APC from total collapse and disgrace.”
Barr Agballa had however responded to the call for his removal. He said, “The truth is that we, the state executive members, asked all leaders and stakeholders to relocate from Abuja and go strengthen their wards. None of them accepted.
“They want me to be holding meetings with them in Abuja. Unfortunately, I have relocated to wards and have visited almost 180 wards as of today.”
