Gov Nyesome Wike of Rivers State, Thursday, vowed to expose ‘human and ideological problems’ of the Peoples Democratic Party on Friday during a media chat.
He stated this after meeting with the stakeholders of the PDP of his state. Those that attended the meeting caught across the 319 wards of the state. It held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The meeting was sequel to assurances given to the PDP’s presidential candidate of the party in the 2023 election, Mr Atiku Abubakar, by some interests in the state that ‘whether Wike supports Atiku or not, that Rivers PDP are behind Atiku’.
Wike came second at the presidential primaries of the PDP, where Atiku Abubakar won the election. Wike was however coasting to victory when a co-contestant and Wike’s ally Gov Aminu Tanbuwal of Sokoto State stepped down for Atiku and asked his supporters to vote for Atiku.
Since then, Wike and his faithful have had cold feet in the affairs of the party. Wike later demanded the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Iyorcha Ayu, to pave way for the emergence of a southerner as the national chairman of the party, an appeal Ayu refused to obey. Atiku said he had not got the power, ‘as a democrat’, to ask Ayu to resign.
Ayu and Atiku are northerners. With the arrangement, the South has no key stake in the PDP.
Former Senate president Adolphus Wabara was recently appointed the BoT chairman of the PDP, an appointment described by some PDP stakeholders as ‘misapplied appeasement’.
