Barr Amos Ogbonna, director, Centre for Non-Violence and Social Justice, Friday, said Nigerians are disappointed that the government of the All Progressives Congress has failed to address Nigeria’s endemic corruption, which informed the election of the party in 2015.
Ogbonna stated this during a programme monitored by our correspondent in Enugu.
He said, “Nigerians elected APC in 2015 because we wanted change. That informed the kicking out of the corrupt PDP then. But now the government of APC is presiding over monumental corruption, almost overtaking PDP.”
He blamed Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution for the corruption in the country, saying ‘it institutionalises corruption in the country’. In his words, “There was no time Nigerians sat down to discuss that constitution, and regrettably, it reads ‘we the people’. The 1999 Constitution is both criminal and dishonest.”
He regretted the corrupt practices ongoing within various political parties, which he said the rift in the PDP ‘has opened up’.
He said, “The alleged exchange of N1bn between a presidential candidate of the PDP and its national chairman Iyorcha Ayu is one, and cutting of grasses with about N1bn by APC is another.”
He also lamented the inability of security agencies to intervene during presidential primaries of both APC and PDP where ‘vote-buying was done openly’
