Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Friday, tasked council chairmen in the state to embark on grass-roots projects to enhance the living standard of their people.
He stated this in Gboko while commissioning Gboko Modern Market which was constructed by the council, Hon Mtom. He commended the council chairman for recording achievements within a short time in office.
He challenged other council chairmen to emulate the rest. In his words, “I challenge other council chairmen to also invite me to your various local governments to commission something. With this, the people will feel the impact and tension will be reduced on the state government.”
He described Gboko as a special local government, being the headquarters of the Tiv nation, and also home to all classes of people.
The speaker, Benue State House of Assembly and PDP governorship candidate, Titus Uba, and the member representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency, Hon John Dyegh, commended the council chairman for his sterling performance, saying that he has shown that young people were prepared for leadership.
The Gboko Traditional Council, led by Ter Gboko, HRH Chief Gabriel Shosum, conferred the title of the ‘Ishima i Gboko’ – (the Heart of Gboko) on Governor Ortom while the wife of the governor, Eunice, was given, ‘Afa Ishima I Gboko’. The chairman of Gboko, Hon Mtom, was awarded the title of ‘Asortar U Gboko”.
Mtom said Gboko Modern Market was built since 1993 by the then chairman, Jon Uan, adding that his administration completed the project to boost the economy of the local government and the state at large.
He commended Governor Ortom for his support to the LGA, adding that the appointment of many Gboko sons and daughters in his administration, construction of roads and other infrastructure, provision of electricity transformer for the market among others, had enhanced the well-being of the people of the area.
