Barr Prince Mandela Umez, a member of the legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, says plans have been concluded for the release of one Mrs Ngozi Umeadi from the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Suleja, after two years of captivity.
Mrs Umeadi, from Anambra State, and mother of five, was arrested and detained over her alleged membership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu.
Mrs Umeadi was granted bail last December under a strident condition.
Her lawyer, Barr Umez, thanked the judiciary for granting her bail. According to him, she would formally leave the correctional centre on Monday to rejoin her family and loved ones.
Barr Umez stated that, “We have finalised everything. However, she will formally be out on Monday, two days from now. When we finished the procedures yesterday, it was already late.
“I went into the matter about three months ago in line with the appeal of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to his legal team to get IPOB members being incarcerated in various detention camps out through legal means.
“She was granted bail with two sureties, who must have N5m each in their bank accounts, and having companies registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. They must also produce their statements of accounts, and tax clearance certificates of three years.
“The conditions were strident indeed. We put on efforts. I briefed Nnamdi Kanu, and he encouraged us to do our best. Aloy Ejimakor, the rendition lawyer, tried a lot, as well as Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, among others.
“She is a free woman now. All arrangements have been concluded. It is victory to Kanu and IPOB. It is a commendation to the judiciary for granting her bail.”
Kanu is being detained by the Department of State Services over his alleged running a proscribed group, jumping bail and treason.
The Appeal Court sitting in Abuja on October 13, 2022 discharged Kanu, but Nigeria’s attorney general, Mr Abubakar Malami, said his discharge did not imply acquittal. His office has also appealed the judgement.
Recall that a High Court in Umuahia, Abia State, earlier ruled that Kanu did not jump bail in 2017 in a suit instituted by his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.
