Mrs Ngozi Umeadi, who was detained at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Suleja, Niger State, for over two years over her alleged links with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has regained her freedom.
Barr Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, tweeted this in a reaction to Mrs Umeadi’s release today. According to him, “Kudos to #MNK, the Kanu family, her frontline lawyer, Barr Mandela Umegborogu, & the others who made it happen. #TeamWork.”
Mrs Umeadi, a mother of five, hails from Anambra State. She was detained over alleged links with the Indigenous People of Biafra, led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Barr Prince Mandela Umez, a member of the legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who spearheaded her release, stated that, “She was granted bail with two sureties, who must have N5m each in their bank accounts, and having companies registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. They must also produce their statements of accounts, and tax clearance certificates of three years.
“The conditions were strident indeed. We put on efforts. I briefed Nnamdi Kanu, and he encouraged us to do our best. She is a free woman now. It is a commendation to the judiciary for granting her bail.”
Kanu is being held at the custody of the Department of State Services over his alleged running a proscribed group, jumping bail and treason. The Court of Appeals in Abuja on 13th Oct 2022 discharged Kanu after federal government’s failure to explain how it renditioned Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria last year.
However, Nigeria’s minister of justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, has refused to release Kanu, arguing that discharge does not imply acquittal.
