Most filling stations at the university community of Nsukka, Enugu State, sell a litre of petrol at N280. The sudden rise of the PMS began on Sunday when it sold at N290, with many of them deliberately shutting down.
A dealer along Orba road said he does not know the cause of the increase.
He said, “My Oga called me, and said we are going to adjust the pump price. The engineer came and did it. We sold N185 on Saturday. It is really a big increase.”
One of the marketers at Energy Oil, along Enugu-Nsukka road, said, “We sell N250 per litre. Others sell N290 per litre. It is not fixed. Buyers move from one station to the other until they find the price they can manage with. The increase will really increase the cost of living of the people.”
A Keke rider, Ikpenwa, said, “I can’t buy at Nsukka. Their things are always expensive. At Obollo-Afor, some filling stations sell at N230, some N240. So instead of buying it at N280, I rather go to Obollo-Afor. Otherwise, the cost of transportation will rise beyond capacity.”
A dealer, Mathias Omeje, said ‘the increase is official. The cost of transporting the commodities will also be factored in’.
It was observed that a majority of the filling stations that jerked up the prices are still selling their old stock.
A commuter, Okonkwo Ezema, said, “Our people like opportunities. I wonder why the sudden increase across filling stations within four hours.
“We are expecting increase in transportation. But many people are now ready to trek because there is no money. Why should PMS be cheaper at Obollo-Afor than Nsukka.”
