The Nigeria Police Command, Borno State, say reported attacks on the convoy of Mr Atiku Abubakar in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, are unfounded.
Mr Abubakar is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 general elections.
Recall that Mr Dino Melaye, a former senator, had said the convoy of Nigeria’s ex-VP was attacked when he was setting down at the venue of his campaign rally Wednesday.
Melaye had alleged that, “Over 100 vehicles were allegedly vandalised by hoodlums from different political parties and about 74 persons hospitalised.”
ASP Sani Shatambaya, Borno State police PRO, told newsmen that, “The news of the attack on Atiku Abubakar’s convoy was not only fake but a false and mischievous attempt at confusing Nigerians. There was no attack on Atiku’s convoy.”
It was however gathered that one Danladi Musa Abbas, 32, was arrested by the police for allegedly ‘attempting to disrupt the escort of the presidential candidate on the way to the airport. He was arrested with a stone’.
The chairman, Borno State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Ali Dalori, also denied links with the attack as alleged by Melaye.
In his words, “I am disappointed by the allegations made by Dino Meleye that some APC thugs attacked Atiku’s convoy while in Maiduguri for their presidential campaign rally.
“We all know that since Governor Babagana Zulum took over the mantle of leadership, in his acceptance speech, he announced a ban on all political rally across the state.”
