Mr Frank Nweke Jr, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Enugu State ahead of the 2023 elections, has restated his commitment to urban renewal and improving the lives of people in urban slums. He stated on a visit to Ugwu-Aaron community in Enugu.
Ugwu Aaron, a hilltop settlement, is located just off Aria Road, G.R.A, Enugu, less than one kilometre from the Enugu State Secretariat and has little or no government presence.
Addressing the community’s leaders, men, women, youths and children who turned up to interact with him, Nweke said his goal was to listen to them and assure them of his commitment to every promise he makes to meet their needs.
Nnena, a young graduate, highlighted the need for water and the rehabilitation of the roads in the community. Hannah, a mother, pleaded for an upgrade in the health infrastructure of the community for the sake of the children and pregnant women.
Reiterating the unavailability of water, Chukwu Emmanuel, the chief security officer of the community, said they were tired of governments lobbying for votes without keeping their end of the bargain after winning the elections. He assured Nweke of their support because of his track record but noted that they would hold him accountable for every promise.
Nweke expressed his displeasure at the living conditions of the people, pointing out the dangers of the mud houses seated on top of the hills. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that basic amenities, such as water, roads and healthcare would be provided for the community, while plans would be made to radically improve their standard of living.
Quoting him, “Our goal is to ensure that every part of Enugu feels the presence of our administration. I am highly concerned about the future of these children here.
“Their healthcare and education is a top priority for me and we will deploy every tool of government to ensure that they live well and achieve their potential.”
Rev Canon Nnaemeka, the Vicar of Ugwu Aaron Anglican Church, assured Nweke of their prayers and support.
Present at the session were Ndubuisi Enechi Onyia, Enugu State’s APGA party chairman; Nonso Nnamani, the APGA House of Representatives candidate for Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, and Bethel Agu, the APGA House of Assembly candidate for Enugu North Constituency.
