Mr Peter Mbah, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State, Saturday, said he was never involved in any plea bargain deal with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as being peddled in some quarters.
Mbah respectively served as chief of staff and finance commissioner under former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani.
Nnamani, a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was found guilty of corruption charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He freed himself through plea bargain.
Mbah is being linked to the plea bargain, having been invited by the anti-graft agency ahead of Senator Nnamani’s conviction.
Mbah clarified during a radio programme in Enugu that he was simply a ‘place-holder’ for ex-governor Nnamani, adding that he was never invited to the commission.
Quoting him, “I was never invited, but my office. I was what could be best described as a ‘placeholder’. I volunteered to go to clarify issues. I was never convicted. It was my office that was invited.
“I never engaged in plea bargain. Before the trial actually, my name and two other persons were struck out. I was never the target of the investigation.
“These records are in court for public consumption. The people saying otherwise can go to the court to obtain the information. I think some people simply don’t want a fair contest in the 2023 polls.
“I have been a victim of maligning. I challenge anybody to prove any link of me to the EFFC.”
