Residents of Oji River LGA of Enugu State, weekend, tasked security operatives to ensure neutrality during the rerun of the Oji River State Assembly election.
Our correspodent reports that the outcome of the March 18 polls shows that Labour Party won 13 seats while the Peoples Democratic Party won 10.
Sheddy Ikpala said, “Let security operatives give every political party a level playing field. If they do otherwise, it will add to the credibility questions already ascribed to them and the Independent National Electoral Commission in the 2023 election.”
Onyinye Eze said, “I am not even aware of the rerun. I read that Labour Party won the seat during the March 18 polls. How come the rerun I wouldn’t know.”
Meanwhile, the state police command has assured residents of Oji River of adequate security during the rerun.
A release by the command’s public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, stated that, “Following INEC’s scheduling of the supplementary election into Oji-River State Assembly Constituency on Saturday 15th April 2023, at Oji-River Central School Polling Unit, Registration Area/Ward 11, which was earlier declared inconclusive, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the maximum deployment of police operatives to the venue and its environ, to ensure the security and peaceful conduct of the election. He made this known after visiting the venue.
“The CP, therefore, calls on the voters to go out en masse and exercise their franchise, while conducting themselves peacefully. He also tasks political parties and their supporters to be well-behaved, while shunning acts of violence, thuggery, vote buying, voters intimidation and other electoral offences during and beyond the period of the election. He warns that anything in the contrary shall be met with the full weight of the law.
“Meanwhile, the electorate and the general public have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report electoral offenders and general acts of crime and criminality to the nearest Police Station or by calling the Command’s election situation room/emergency numbers on: 08032003702, 08075390883 or 08086671202. They can also call the Police PRO on: 08099854883 or send emails to infoenugupolice@gmail.com.”
