The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has praised the electoral process that made the June 12, 1993 presidential election a reference point in the country.
Our correspondent reports that the election, conducted through the Option A4 under Prof Humphrey Nwosu as INEC chairman, was won by Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party, but was annulled under a bizarre circumstance.
Obi, via his verified Twitter handle, described June 12 as a historic day, but regretted that Nigeria’s foundational pillars of democracy are fraught with errors.
He tweeted, “June 12 is a historic day that deserves to be celebrated. It underpins our long collective journey to nationhood as a true democracy.
“Regrettably, we are now in an era where these foundational pillars of democracy are undermined by prevalent impunity and pervasive violence and bloodletting.”
The former Anambra governor further stated that there is a ‘trust deficit between the leaders and Nigerians’, and called for ‘the search for a credible electoral system that would command the trust, confidence and belief of Nigerians just like June 12 did’.
