The Enugu State Police Command, Tuesday, confirmed attack on a police station located in Ikem, headquarters of Isi-Uzo local government area of the state.
The attackers invaded the station, carting away some arms, a source said. Unconfirmed sources said the attackers were shouting ‘release Kanu’. Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. Interim leader of IPOB, Simon Ekpa, yesterday, claimed the group is not behind the increasing insecurity in South East.
Meanwhile, the state police command, in a release by its public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said the attackers were however repelled. He also said they were suspected to be IPOB members.
Ndukwe wrote, “Tactical Police Operatives of the command are on the trail of armed hoodlums, suspected to be members of the outlawed IPOB/ESN group, who in their numbers today, 18/07/2023, at about 4.30am, attempted to attack Isi-Uzo Police Division of the command, but were repelled by police operatives on duty.
“Many of the miscreants escaped with gunshot wounds, while one of the operatives who sustained gunshot wound is receiving treatment and in stable condition.”
