Nigerians, Thursday, described the unintentional revelation of Senate president Godswill Akpabio about cash transfers to senators’ accounts for their holiday as ‘the height of insensitivity’ of the nation’s lawmakers to the plight of the masses.
Akpabio, former governor of Akwa-Ibom State, had during the plenary on Wednesday, said, “In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the clerk of the National Assembly.”
He shortly retracted his statement, although too late, when he noticed that he was on a national television. He later submitted that, “I withdraw that statement”, and continued, “In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the Senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return.”
Reacting, a Labour unionist, Jerome Apeh, said, “It’s a pity that these people are just after their pockets. Upon what Nigerians are passing through, including non-payment of pensions and gratuities, our senators are simply after their holiday allowances. That Akpabio tried to withdraw his statement simply means licking his own spit.”
Pastor Eze, residing in Awka, said, “They don’t lack anything, after all the savings from the removal of fuel subsidy are being shared among our leaders while the poor are made to die gradually and hopelessly. They prioritised their welfare ahead of the Nigerian masses. May God save this country. It is unfortunate.”
Simon Okeke, a student, said, “What do you expect? Workers are threatening to go on strike, and our leaders are there sharing our commonwealth. The truth remains that 90 percent of them did not win their elections.”
