Winner Of BEETA Playwright Competition  To Earn $3, 000

The sixth edition of the Beeta Playwright Competition aiming to find new voices in the literary genre of drama in Nigeria has been announced.

The competition, championed by Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, is open to indigenous playwrights between the ages of 18-40.

The deadline for all entries is the 30th of September, 2023, the organisers said, adding that the theme is ‘NO LIMITS’.

Our correspondent gathered that ten finalists will be selected for a writers’ workshop with a winner emerging at the grand finale.

It was gathered that the winner stands to win prizes worth up to $3,000, a publishing deal, a guaranteed stage production and a three-month paid residency at the Utopia Theatre, United Kingdom, led by Mojisola Elufowoju.

There will also be consolation prizes for the top 10. The competition’s jury members are veteran playwright Ahmed Yerima, actress Ego Boyo, theatre director and co-founder, PAW Studios, Kenneth Uphopho; Shuaibu Husseini and Paper worth Book publisher and founder, Ibiso Graham-Douglas.

Former winners of the competition are Paul Ugbede’s ‘Our Son the Minister’; Abdul Qudus-Ibrahim’s ‘Jagagba;’ Achalugo Chioma Ezekobe’s ‘Daughters of the East;’ Temilolu Fosudo’s ‘Black Dust’ and recently, Femi Akande’s ‘The Mask We Wear,’ which won the fifth edition.
