The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau wants investigations into the public circulation of the personal data of Master Nwamini David.
David is alleged to have been engaged by the former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, to donate an organ for their ailing daughter, Sonia. The breakdown in the deal led to the arrest and detention of Ekweremadu and his wife in the UK pending the hearing of the matter on July 7 2022,
The call for the investigations was made by NDPB’s head of legal, enforcement and regulations, Mr Babatunde Bamigboye, in a statement made available to Adadareporters on Wednesday.
The agency said such sensitive information was prohibited from being made public without the consent of whoever is concerned.
He regretted that private data of David and Ekweremadu’s daughter ‘are being processed by data controllers, particularly media organisations without regard to the implications under the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) 2019’.
According to the statement, “NDPR prohibits the processing of personal data without the informed consent or other lawful bases known to law.
“Accordingly, all data controllers and all persons are hereby warned of the consequences of using anyone’s data in violation of NDPR. The bureau recognizes the vital role of media organizations in educating the general public.
“In carrying out this important assignment, however, it is obligatory to respect the boundaries of citizens’ privacy. The bureau has set machinery in motion to cooperate with other public institutions within and outside Nigeria to ensure transparency and accountability in the instant case.”
